Sticks are truly the original wooden toy.

The possibilities a simple stick can provide are endless – building forts, drawing in the sand, wands, creating nature art, friends at a tea party…

Playing with sticks not only provides a child with a tactile connection to nature, but sharpens fine and gross motor skills and provides them with an opportunity to use critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Yes they can pose as a bit of danger, but so do many things in life.. Falling off bikes, tripping over their own feet, running into one another, and that’s just a few of the things that have happened to my girls. Its important that we let our kids explore, play and use their imagination as much as possible..

Obviously we encourage them to look around before swinging a stick, and to never hit a living creature with a stick.. but sometimes these things are reinforced through experience.. and that’s all part of growing and learning.

Additionally, lifting logs, pulling branches, and climbing trees builds physical strength and confidence.
